Most body armour is designed to protect the vital organs from penetration from either the front or the rear.   The problem with that is that some attacks come from the side and are designed to cause damage in the most vulnerable areas.   Recently we have been issue Side protection bullet proof vests.  These are ideal when the attack is most likely to come from the side.  The majority of our operations involved convoy duty and the most likely direction we would be attacked from was the side of the road.  This made the side protection vests an almost perfect solution to our protection.
