Not long ago I visited an older relative and, as she answered the door, apologized because she had been “Hoovering” the floor.  That got me thinking about products which become household names and why.  As I thought back, I realized my entire family used the word Hoover to mean vacuum cleaner.  I also remembered that every member of the family owned one model or other.  This is primarily because they are often given as wedding gifts.  Since Hoover vacuum cleaners don’t seem to wear out, most of us still have ours.  After reflecting on these thoughts for a while I realized that, with my family history, Hoover  will always mean vacuum cleaner to me.
