Opinion On “Life”
January 20th, 2012 . by adminAs a leadership life insurance advisor where my career spans nearly 25 years with two major carriers (besides being active in several professional associations)—it is very disappointing that Primerica and others in our field want to diminish testing and licensing standards on the basis of race! Education, testing and licensing in life insurance has absolutely nothing to do with race, age, or gender. (This becomes insulting to the many very intelligent, educated, and driven individuals representing the ethnic background mentioned in this article. My office alone has several multi-cultural role models and success stories. And I know that other companies in our field are well-represented here.)
Similar to say, a physician or an attorney—can a candidate achieve scores for licensing and certification that have been widely developed by our peers and regulators? If the candidate cannot—then they should not be working as a broker or agent.
Accommodation, special exemptions, and lowering paradigms are not what the life insurance field should become. If anything, we as members of this field should strive for increased knowledge and higher standards to improve upon the reputation and respect we have thus far, earned. The public and our clients deserve the best of the best with high credentials and certifications when it comes to protecting their families and themselves.
Most of the major life insurance carriers in our industry are strong advocates for multi-cultural markets. We all are seeking and welcoming as many qualified professionals from such backgrounds to join our great companies in order to educate the individuals and business owners to a higher degree regarding their human life value (in connection with the proper types of testing and amounts of insurance). This does not mean that the career path in the life insurance industry is for everyone. It is for a select group of ambitious, financially motivated, competitive, entrepreneurial, honest, genuine, mature, and well spoken individuals eager to build a career in an incentive based industry.
