I had never bothered checking my own credit rating online until I became a victim of identity theft.  The only time my credit score was viewed was when I was looking for financing on something.  I hadn’t purchased anything for awhile and was shocked when I tried to buy a car and was turned down.  They finance manager at the dealership wouldn’t tell me what the problem was so I had to figure out how to check my credit report free of charge.  I was happy to discover that it was easy to do, but was horrified when I saw what the report revealed.  I am still working on getting everything straightened out and plan to check my report frequently from now on.
